Economic Development with two Bulls

It was almost a year back when I depicted how a poor student fails in exam although the sitting arrangement was between two of the top ten students. The reasons were: neither the student had the ability to copy the same answers nor had the ability to customize the answer as per the need. It is absolutely a pity as no friend will keep telling you answer during the whole exam, rather it is oneself who has to decide as soon as possible if she can make efficient strategies not only to pass the exams but also to set standards of own. Here, lets see how development will work out with two bulls after we experimented once with students in an examination hall. Imagine an agricultural land which is cultivated with the assistance of two bulls. The first thing that is to be remembered is that plough cannot be used without two bulls and they have to complement each other for the efficient production. If the two bulls do not complement each other, the whole land cannot be ploughed and the owne...

Old Age: Policy Paradigms

Image
Old age is a vital event of human life. Even though it comes enriched with loads of hard earned experience and expertise, it is not cherished like childhood. Government policies along with social practices treat old-age people as liabilities and in doing so undermine the potentials they possess to contribute in the progress of their families, organizations and the nation. Reforms at the policy level, in execution of the policies by state agencies, in human resource management policies of organizations and in the attitude of society and family members towards the dignified utilization and management of old-aged population are important for establishing a socially and economically active population equilibrium. Inability to make a paradigm shift in the treatment of old age population can lead to serious population management problems.    Nepal’s old age population has increased on an average rate of 32 percent during the censuses of 1961-2011 (see table). Starting from a 4...

Food Investment Good Investment

Nepal is an agronomic country. The dominance of agriculture persists in the country owing to what has been written several times in various articles published by different publications; more than two-third of the population engaged in the agriculture to contribute merely around one-third of the GDP. And with the alarming situation of more than 1700 people leaving the country every day for various purposes, the contribution  seems to go further down – one, there will be few people working as human capital for agriculture and two, the agriculture pattern has not upgraded itself from traditional approaches. It is not true that no work has been done for the remedial purpose but the effectiveness is what has remained questionable. The world now believes that it is out of the crisis phase but the Food Price Index of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has stringently remained either above or around the upper bound which reached during the food crisis in 2008. In case of Nepal, ...

Contract Farming and Commodity Market

Image
Contract Farming and Commodity Market have a long legacy to share with. When it is about introducing the local agro commodities to the commodity exchange for the trading and distribution, contract farming has always been taken as one of the effective means to meet the production, demand and supply needs in the modernized and efficient trading system. The days are different in the world now when there used to be spot trading only in the world; for now, the production and sale on a contractual basis is not at all new to the world. Especially when dealt with the perishable agro products, the existence of the contract farming goes long back which holds true for the products like dairy products, fruits, vegetables, etc. Spurred by changes in (international) competition, consumer demand, technology and governmental policies, agricultural systems are increasingly organized into tightly aligned chains and networks, where coordination among production, processing and distribution activiti...

Smallholder Farmers: Sufferers in Nepal

Image
It is no wonder when I say agriculture is the prime occupation of the country. The government statistics speak that more than 65 percent of the population is directly involved in agriculture and more than 80 percent of the population is dependent on the agriculture directly and indirectly. But, with this level of dependence comes a bigger tragedy which is the least contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country which remains around 35 percent. Why does that happen? The major reasons that have been repeated several times are the segregated lands, greater dependence on natural rainfall, lack of use of any technology, lack of knowledge about modern farming techniques, etc. one reason which is very least discussed is the Smallholder farmers who carry out their farming at smaller level and seem very reluctant to switch to the commercial production of crops. There are several definitions for the smallholder farmers. One of the reports of United Nations Development Prog...

Frienomics-Economics among Friends!

Mark Twain once said, “Good Friends, good books and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life”. Few might agree to this but many putatively might not as many things and activities of many lives are associated with friends. But do good friends exist in non-ideal life? Many people might take it as dramatically acceptable while few might take it to contra-note. One might find it strange to believe if any economics exist among the friends, but the fact being that it does exist, since the childhood. Both behavioral and financial investments exist among the friends. Time is money and time is one of the most expensive resources on earth. This is the major resource that is invested in friendship, but unfortunately it is absolutely zero-valued when it comes to friends. The investment or economics among friends is very interesting; as it violates one of the basic principles of life and economics “There is no free lunch”. Usually, among the friends, the lunches are free and thus, it stand...

Nepali Development Practices Humiliates R&D!

Image
Research and Development section, commonly known as R&D or RD, is very important in an organization and stands as backbone to the organization. May it be in the engineering sector, medical sector, communication sector or the socio-economic sector, R&D is very important by its kind only. After few lines of praise for R&D, people must be eager enough to know what R&D is and what does it do? Fig: Research and Development Expenditure (% of GDP)                                                                      Data Source : World Bank  Initially, the concept of R&D ...

An Overview of Nepali Economy!

Image
The recent development in the macroeconomic indicators has been in the positive trend, but the usefulness of the same remains the question. The economic growth rate has been lower than the estimate on one hand whereas the inflation rate, the trade deficit and the remittance has been in the rising end.             Though the estimated growth rate of the GDP was 5.5 percent, the GDP growth rates remained much less, less than the growth rate of previous year (4.5 percent). The GDP growth rate at the basic price showed the rate of 3.56 percent whereas the growth rate at the producer’s price did not cross 3.7 percent. This justifies the lack of proper research and development (R&D) in the making of plans which not only made the targets ambitious but also did not help tackle the contingencies that would come in between the smooth implementation of the development program. The most contradictory part of the macroeconomic planning...
